Cornwall is a beautiful region with fabulous beaches plus an interesting history. Known for offshore fishing, tin mining, pasties, wrecks, surfing and art, Cornwall is a wonderful place to go. Whilst it will get really busy in places during summer, there are still places to go to get away from everything. Take a look at camp sites or holiday cottages in Cornwall and book up early so that you get the dates that are best for you. There are companies that have good selections of Cornwall cottages and they are worth checking out.
St Ives is a town widely known for artists and it now houses the Tate Gallery. The lighting and the scenery are inspiring and there are many places to view artists at work or enjoy the work they produce in galleries.
Mousehole is a lovely village with a small harbour and winding streets. Dylan Thomas actually referred to it as the ‘loveliest village in England’. Another beautiful village is Port Isaac which was used to film Doc Martin with Martin Clunes. Try The Old School Hotel for different holiday accommodation. It actually used to be the school but has now been converted into accommodation and has a very good restaurant.
St Michael’s Mount is an interesting place to go. You get to it by rowing boat and you walk up a steep path to the castle at the top of the island.
If swimming is your thing, try out the open air pool on the seafront in Penzance. The town itself is quite large and has some great Georgian buildings.
The Atlantic coast of Cornwall is the destination to go to surf. Newquay is considered the most famous place to go and it is geared up for the trendy youngsters that flock there. The town features a surf school and plenty of clubs and pubs. The town continues to be suitable for families but those who want to get away from it all but still enjoy some surfing would be best off looking elsewhere along the coast. Polzeath is a great spot to learn.
Lands End is the most south-westerly point of mainland Britain and a rugged piece of coastline. The close by beach destination of Sennen is excellent for surfing.
At Watergate Bay, where celeb chef Jamie Oliver has his restaurant Fifteen, you can chill out with some fantastic food and sit back and watch the extreme sporting activities – from surfing to kite surfing. The Extreme Academy will teach you almost any sail and board sport you want.
More star chefs are evident in Padstow. Rick Stein has his seafood restaurant there, a fish and chip shop and his cookery school. The May Day celebrations are really a must see but be prepared for many people.
If legends are your thing, the reputed birthplace of King Arthur is a must see. This attractive castle ruin is situated high above the crashing waves. Merlin’s cave is also well worth seeing. You may also like The Museum of Witchcraft in nearby Boscastle. The village was devastated in 2004 with a flash flood but is now rebuilt and still a wonderful destination. Wander along the cliff path for great views over the harbour and don’t forget to take a Cornish pasty with you to eat on the way.
For yet more amazing Cornish meals, try Austell’s fine dining restaurant in St Austell. You can combine it with a visit to the close by Eden Project with its remarkable collection of plants from all around the world set in stunning biomes.
